What is SAE J2534?
SAE J2534-1 API is the "Recommended Practice for Microsoft Windows 32-Bit Application Programming Interface for Pass-Through Vehicle Reprogramming".
Vehicle manufacturers are required to provide a Windows software application for reprogramming their model year 2004 and beyond vehicles using a J2534-1 capable interface (e.g. Mongoose, CarDAQ-Plus, or CarDAQ-M). This standard and associated EPA requirements will give all vehicle service/repair facilities, not just dealers, the ability to perform in-field ECU software updates.
If you want hands on training on J2534, an engineer from Drew Technologies teaches SAE class C0733 "Understanding and Using the SAE J2534-1 API to Access Vehicle Networks". To learn about this class, email sales@drewtech.com.
In addition to reprogramming, J2534 supports diagnostics and calibration. The API provides protocol-independent functions to:
- Read and write messages
- Establish periodic messages
- Perform filtering, and assert ECU reprogramming voltages.
Ford J2534 Module Programming
Servicing newer, increasingly complicated vehicles has put independent repair shops at a disadvantage when compared to auto dealerships that have access to the latest service tools and knowledge databases. Accurately diagnosing and repairing many of these newer vehicles used to require full access to expensive factory service tools.
At the center of this problem lies the ability to reprogram the computers inside newer automobiles. Diagnosing and repairing vehicles often requires reprogramming (reflashing) the vehicle with the latest updates available from the factory. After a vehicle is assembled and sold at a new car dealership, the automaker’s engineering groups often fix common problems found in the field by releasing a new reflash. The new flash is not a recall, and therefore most vehicles on the road will not get the update unless they are brought in to the dealership for servicing. These re-flashes could fix transmission shifting problems, hesitation, rough idle, drivability, check engine lights, emissions quality, poor performance, or any other of a number of common problems. Without the reflashing capabilities, independent repair shops may spend time and money trying to repair an issue with hard parts that cannot be repaired without a calibration flash update.
Before the Mongoose® Ford was available, a shop had to invest in a Factory Service tool or other costly reprogramming system to update calibrations in modern vehicles. Mongoose® Ford® is a great alternative for independent repair shops that want to reprogram calibrations in most Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, and Mazda vehicles without purchasing expensive, proprietary tools. The Mongoose® Ford will work with Ford Module Programming (FPM) at motorcraftservice.com to reprogram J1850PWM and CAN Ford modules.
